Professor Olurotimi John Badero is a globally recognized physician, innovator, and thought leader, widely recognized as the world’s first and only fully trained, board-certified Interventional Cardio-Nephrologist—a groundbreaking specialty that integrates advanced cardiovascular and kidney care. His pioneering contributions to this emerging field have earned him numerous awards and international recognition.

Raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Prof. Badero is a native of Isonyin in the northeastern part of Ogun State. His accomplishment of becoming the first Professor of Medicine from Isonyin is historically significant, especially for a smaller town, inspiring future generations to pursue careers in medicine and academia.
He currently resides in Mississippi, where he runs a private practice.

A guiding principle throughout his life has been a piece of advice from his father: “Good is not good enough. Strive for perfection.” This philosophy has shaped his relentless pursuit of excellence. The name “Olurotimi,” given to him by his father, means “God stands by me,” reflecting a deep sense of faith that has influenced his journey. Though he once aspired to become an engineer, a pivotal conversation with his father redirected him toward medicine—a path on which he would ultimately achieve remarkable distinction.

Born in Lagos as the seventh of nine children to the Chief Eliab Olufemi Badero and Mrs. Stella Taiwo Badero, his early life was marked by both resilience and loss. He survived a near death measles case at age four and experienced the heartbreaking loss of siblings—his younger sister Olufunmilayo Abosede Badero to bronchopneumonia when she was just 11 months old and his brother Peter Olanrewaju Badero to sickle cell disease. On the very day he passed his final medical examinations, he learned of his brother’s death, shortly after surviving a serious motor vehicle accident. This moment marked a bittersweet milestone, as he never had the opportunity to celebrate becoming a physician.

Prof. Badero’s academic journey has been exceptional. He skipped multiple grades due to outstanding performance, became the best overall student in Nigeria in a National Science Quiz Competition, and went on to complete four fellowships and training across seven medical specialties. His postgraduate training includes an Internal Medicine residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, a Nephrology and Hypertension fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine, and a Cardiology fellowship at SUNY Downstate. During his cardiology training, he survived another near-fatal accident on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York, where his car hung from the bridge’s railings.

He further advanced his expertise at the Yale University School of Medicine Bridgeport Program, where he completed fellowships in Interventional Cardiology and Peripheral Vascular Intervention with distinction. He later completed an additional fellowship in Interventional Nephrology, Endovascular Medicine, and Dialysis Access Intervention at SUNY Downstate. Altogether, he has undertaken an unprecedented ten consecutive years of postgraduate medical training in the United States and holds multiple specialty board certifications.

Prof. Badero has received numerous honors locally and internationally, including recognition from the United States Congress for his outstanding contributions to medicine and service to humanity. He has also been recognized in the United Kingdom and Africa for his pioneering contributions to the field of Cardio-Nephrology. A prolific scholar, he has authored several peer-reviewed publications, serves on the editorial boards of multiple scientific journals, and has contributed as a reviewer for leading medical education programs.

He is a fellow of several prestigious professional organizations, including the American College of Physicians, American Society of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation, American Society of Diagnostic & Interventional Nephrology, Medical College of Physicians (Nig), American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, International College of Angiology, American Society of Angiology, American College of Cardiology, and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.

A trailblazer in clinical innovation, Prof. Badero has performed several landmark procedures. In the United States, he performed the first transradial cardiac catheterization and coronary angioplasty at Central Mississippi Medical Center in 2012, and the first transradial percutaneous coronary intervention at River Oaks Hospital in 2014—earning him recognition as one of Mississippi’s Health Care Heroes.

In Nigeria, he pioneered the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Interventional Cardiology Program at Iwosan Lagoon Hospitals in Lagos, where he serves as Chief of Interventional Cardiology and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Since returning in 2023, he has led groundbreaking advancements, including performing and publishing several first-of-their-kind interventional cardiology and endovascular procedures in the country, such as the first selective renal angiogram and first documented endovascular limb salvage revascularization procedure for critical limb ischemia with totally occluded arteries in patients with peripheral arterial disease.

An in-demand international speaker, Prof. Badero has addressed audiences across the world on topics of innovation, purpose, resilience, and healthcare transformation. He has spoken at major global platforms, including youth empowerment conferences and international policy forums, and was a featured speaker alongside former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. He has also been recognized with honors such as the Most Purposeful Nigerian Award.

Deeply committed to global health equity, Prof. Badero is actively involved in medical missions, nonprofit initiatives, and mentorship programs. He has served as a consultant to multiple African countries in establishing cardio-renal programs, cardiac centers of excellence, and training frameworks for physicians. He currently serves as a Visiting Professor of Medicine and Distinguished Scholar at the University of Lagos, where he contributes to research and the training of cardiologists in advanced interventional cardiac and endovascular procedures.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Prof. Badero is a man of faith and service, actively involved in ministry as an Assistant Pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
